Maratona Dles Dolomites

The sound of bicycles dominates the Dolomites for a day

04 MAY 2015

Maratona Dles Dolomites

An event that runs for a whole day in the Dolomites and through the most prestigious and spectacular passes in the Alps. Founded with about 160 participants, now around 9,000 members participate and up to 20,000 requests are received each year. The race takes place the beginning of July and the mountain passes are closed to traffic throughout the day, leaving only the sound of gear shifting and the swish of the bicycle wheels as they speed through the Alpine air.

A succession of thousands of people flow through the Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, Giau, Falzarego and Valparola passes as they prepare for the challenging ups and downs typical of this area and race. The departure in La Villa in Badia around 6:30 in the morning has the same starting gate for all three courses and allows all participants to choose which one of three routes to complete along the way. The three courses of varying difficulty, length and duration are designed to leave the door open for participants to decide: continue the challenging climbs and face difficulties encountered on the way or successfully complete shorter routes feeling invigorated by the racing experience. Over the years, weather has created different scenarios, even snow on top of the passes surrounding the cyclists with a landscape that many competitors could never have imagined, while at the same time offering an incredibly picturesque panorama.
